Japanese Movie Review: The Last 10 Years (余命10年 Yomei 10 Nen) - 2022

What will you do if you only have 10 years left to live?

***

Hello, everyone! Today I want to write a review of a very famous Japanese movie, The Last 10 Years. Released in March 2022 in Japan, this movie is one of the 10 highest-grossing Japanese films released at the Japanese box office during 2022(¥3.00 billion or US$20.9 million) according to Wikipedia, and I've seen many people rave about it. It is adapted from a book with the same title by Ruka Kosaka. The book itself is very popular too.

Matsuri Takabayashi (Nana Komatsu) is diagnosed with incurable disease when she was in her first year of university. She was hospitalised and one of the patients with the same disease like her, gave her a video recorder to capture the beautiful moments. Matsuri is getting better and is allowed to go home; she's taking her medicine regularly. She met her senior high school friends who know her condition. One of the friends is Sanae Fujisaki (Nao), who works in a publishing company.

One day, an invitation to a junior high school reunion came. Matsuri thinks that it might be fun because none of her junior high's friends knows about her disease, so she went there. There, she met Kazuto Manabe (Kentaro Sakaguchi).

 Kentaro Sakaguchi as Kazuto Manabe.

Of course Matsuri doesn't want to fall in love. She already decided that she won't fall in love. It's not on her plan, especially when she knows that she can only live approximately for ten years. But we know that Matsuri and Kazuto will fall for each other.

The thing is, we already know how the story goes between Matsuri and Kazuto. It seems like we can see the ending from the very beginning, but the movie is very very beautiful. Everything is a masterpiece. The way it is shot, the scenery, the writing, the atmosphere, the acting, the pacing, the emotion, the soundtrack. Ah, I love this movie so much.

As I said, we know that there will be sad moments. The way Matsuri fights to live her life. She's so young, yet, she can't do much with her life. She can't work like normal people. She struggles with her life. She feels bad towards her family. Luckily, her friend, Sanae, gives a part time job for Matsuri to write a review on the publisher's website. I empathize with her. She wants a normal life, wants a long life but she can't have it.

Kazuto struggles with his life too. When he met Matsuri, his life changed. He becomes a better person because of her. He is so soft and so pure, in my opinion. He also accepts Matsuri despite her condition.

Beside the leads, I also love other characters. Matsuri's family is very supportive towards her. I couldn't imagine how heartbreaking it is to have a family member with incurable disease. Matsuri and her family is one of the best parts in this movie, I think. Sanae and Takeru (Yuki Yamada) are great friends of both Matsuri and Kazuto. They are supportive towards the leads as well. Every character conveys the emotions very well. Moreover, the characters are realistic and they have flaws, but they grow as the movie goes.

The scenery! This movie is set in many seasons, because we see Matsuri's life through the years. Spring, summer, autumn and winter. It's beautiful. Cherry blossoms will be shown a lot throughout the movie, because it's important to the leads.

Not only the heartbreaking moments, we will see other moments too. My eyes get blurry and my heart aches when I see the characters struggle. There are moments that warm my heart. On some occasions, I smile because I see the sweetest ones. The chemistry between the leads is top notch too. I love Nana and Kentaro together.

When I was watching this movie, I thought a lot about life. There are people who desperately want to live, want to live longer, yet they can't. They don't have a chance to live their life because of many reasons such as disease and others. We have our life, but mostly, we complain about it easily, sometimes just because of a little thing. It makes me think that we should live our life gratefully. We should appreciate the life that has been given to us. Appreciate little things in our life. We should be a better person and live our life to the fullest. It reminds me to do those things.

Overall, I love everything about The Last 10 Years. There is no one single thing that I dislike about this movie. So, I give it 5/5🌟 I'm also curious about the book. As I already mentioned, the book itself is popular in Japan. I hope a local publisher will translate and publish the book. See you on the next post!💗
