Japanese Movie Review: Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight (Konya, Sekai kara kono Koi ga Kietemo) [2022]

If you love torturing yourself by watching sad movies like I do, then you need to watch Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight (今夜、世界からこの恋が消えても -native title).

(The Movie Poster)

I will insert the official Twitter here, and more information on AsianWiki here.

Maori Hino (Riko Fukumoto) has retrograde amnesia. She basically will forget everything if she falls asleep. When she wakes up, she reads many signs in her room that tell her to read her diary. Her diary is the only thing that can explain her activities before she was asleep. One day, Toru Kamiya (Shunsuke Michieda), a guy from her school, asks her to be his girlfriend. And Maori said yes. Then the story begins.

(Riko Fukumoto as Maori Hino)

Reading from the synopsis on AsianWiki and other sources, we already know where the story will go. I mean, isn't it already sad that Maori have to face that situation?

There is a fake dating trope in this movie. Yes, at first Maori and Toru are faking their relationship because of their own needs, but by the time, we see that the line gets blurred and they break the rules that have already been made.

The problem is, even if they spend their time happily everyday, Maori will forget about it. Always. Maori can read the memories they made, but the feeling between reading it and experiencing it is different. It hurts so much seeing her suffer. And it is even worse seeing Toru has to accept that. But Toru, this guy is really a kind hearted, gentle, and strong guy. He accepts the fact that Maori won't remember him, but he still loves her, stands beside her, makes her happy and commits that whatever happens, he will fill Maori's days with happy memories. How sweet he is! I fall in love with him easily🥺 I mean, where can I find my own Toru Kamiya?

(Maori is writing on her diary)

Ah, how can I describe Maori and Toru's relationship? These two have so much chemistry. I read somewhere that Riko Fukumoto and Shunsuke Michieda costarred in a drama before (even though they're not a couple there); it might explain the chemistry. They have worked together before, so they might enjoy each other's company. Riko and Shunsuke are the perfect casts for Maori and Toru.

Do you remember from my previous post (Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare) when I said that Riko will shine in the future? It happens! She really shines in this movie. A cheerful, beautiful Maori is a perfect match for gentle, quiet Toru. And Riko is great at portraying her character. Shunsuke did an amazing job too. It's the first movie of his that I've watched and I'm really impressed.

Another thing that I love in this movie is the friendship between Maori, Toru, and Izumi (Maori's best friend). Izumi (Kotone Furukawa) protects Maori at all costs. She makes a hard decision in the movie but I understand her. I would do the same if I were her.

(Toru and Izumi)

And the plot twist! I've seen it coming, but it still hurts very much😭 if I was watching this movie alone, in my room, I would bawl my eyes out. That's how sad this movie is. It breaks my heart to pieces but in the best ways possible.

This movie teaches us a lot about life. Friendship, familial relationship, about love, about the time etc. The writing and the cinematography are also beautiful. Plus with great casts and a wonderful story? I'm sold. I love this movie so much I give it 5/5🌟 have you watched this movie? Tell me your opinion on the comments below😊
