Moonlight Shadow (2021) Movie Review

Are you looking for a movie that's gonna break your heart? Well, Moonlight Shadow is the right one for you.

Satsuki (Nana Komatsu) and Hitoshi (Hio Miyazawa) were lovers. They accidentally met one day near a river and since that day, they have been inseparable. Hitoshi was a calm man while Satsuki was cheerful, especially when she was with Hitoshi.

(Satsuki and Hitoshi)

Their relationship was really cute. Their interaction, their support towards each other. They were literally soulmates.

They decided to live together but suddenly, Hitoshi died in a car accident, when he ushered his brother's (Himi Sato) girlfriend (Nana Nakahara) home.

(Hitoshi's brother and his girlfriend)

Satsuki feels very heartbroken. She goes running everyday until she feels her chest burning, just so she can forget Hitoshi. She doesn't sleep well, doesn't eat well. When you feel like you have found someone who is right for you, and then suddenly, he or she passed away, life will never be the same for you. This happens to Satsuki as well.

If Satsuki tries to forget Hitoshi by running everyday, Hitoshi's brother expresses his sadness in a different way. He wears his girlfriend's sailor school uniform everyday.

One day, Satsuki heard about the moon shadow phenomenon. It is said that the phenomenon only happens once in a hundred years. During the end of a full moon, it is said that you can meet the dead for one more time. Will Satsuki meet Hitoshi?

This movie is based on a short story under the same title in the novel 'Kitchen' by Banana Yoshimoto. I have read the book, and I can feel the sadness, the pain, the sorrow that the characters have been through. They lost their loved ones and it will never be easy for everyone. But I love that each character grows as the book (and the movie) goes. This movie is relatively short (only one and a half hours), but I would say that this movie is gonna break your heart. The theme is not easy but relatable in our life. The actors and actresses portray their roles really well so we can feel like we were in the characters' shoes. I love the ending of this movie and the message it conveys, so I will give it 4/5🌟
