Hello everyone! Thank you for visiting my blog. As the first post on this blog, I will review a Japanese movie that was actually released two years ago, precisely on April 1, 2017.

For the complete information about this movie, you can visit http://asianwiki.com/The_Dark_Maidens

The film tells the sudden death of Itsumi Shiraishi (played by Marie Iitoyo) and leaves a mysterious impression because she held Lily of the Valley flowers in her hand. Itsumi was the daughter of the manager of Seibo Maria High School, which is the school for girls. Itsumi was a popular and respected girl in the school. Itsumi was also the leader of the literary club there, and the club is a very prestigious club in their high school. Then there were rumors spread that Itsumi was killed by one members of the literary club. In short, Sayuri Sumikawa (played by Fumika Shimizu) who is a close friend of Itsumi and the new leader of the literary club, holds a regular club meeting. This regular meeting is held by reading short stories from each member, and the theme of this time meeting is Itsumi Shiraishi's death.

*SPOILER ALERT*
Let's take a look at the plot first. I've read the novel several times and I'm a huge fan of the novel. This novel is the first Japanese novel that I've ever read. The plot in this movie is almost the same like the novel, but they've changed some details, for example, Diana and Emma's mother is not a Japanese but their mother is Bulgarian in the original novel. In the novel, you can imagine Diana's passion in learning Japanese so she can meet Itsumi and talk to her more intimately. The character of Sonoko Koga (the one who is close to Itsumi's father) from the novel, is also removed. Back to the plot, the movie begins with the explanation of the occasion that the girls hold and in this part also explained that light is so meaningful in our lives. The first girl that read her own short story was Mirei Nitani. Then Akane Kominami, Diana Decheba, and Shiyo Takaoka. Each story was written from their own perspectives and makes us wonder what is actually going on.

Second, the characters. When the first time I saw the teaser trailer I was like, "Um, I think Itsumi has a long hair." Yup! Itsumi in this  movie has a short hair. I think it's okay because Diana (played by Tina Tamashiro) is also has short hair (*in the novel, their beauty is often compared by one of the characters). Other characters' appearances like hair, eyes, and others are also very different from the novel but the actress and actor's acting was good. The actors and actress really did a good job because I think they are very young but can portray their roles really well.

Overall, this movie is good even the plot is too fast, in my opinion. But I understand because a movie has a limit time and can't include the whole events in the novel in it. The plot is still really good and the movie still maintains the authenticity of the story. You might feel confused in the beginning, but everything is going to be clear when Sayuri began to read a short story from Itsumi. From the movie, I can watch some things that I didn't understand from the novel. It's worth watching.

My rating (my rating can be different from other people's rating): 3,5/5
